GOLD WINNING WINES
The first week of judging this year produced an impressive 810 Gold medal winners. Of these, 167 were elevated to a Platinum award (see p57), of which 50 then became Best in Show winners (p27).
BEST IN SHOW WINNING WINES
After two intense weeks of blind tasting by top wine professionals from around the world, all 167 Platinum medal winners were re-examined by the four DWWA Co-Chairs. This saw the following 50 wines promoted to the prized position of Best in Show for 2024
Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2021, Chardonnay 2022
Untypically for one of our vintage reports, in Western Australia we’ve put the spotlight on different vintages for red and white, with Cabernets coming from the tricky 2021 and Chardonnays from the contrastingly heat-driven 2022. Our author in residence selects 20 top wines from each
English & Welsh still wines
A great opportunity to review the action across the domestic wine sector, this tasting revealed plenty of high-scoring wines in many and varied styles
BORDEAUX 2023 The Decanter verdict
Good but not great, very good in places. Weather conditions and consequent producer decisions in vineyard and winery played a central role in 2023, particularly for reds from all appellations. Here we present 60 of our experts’ top choices from more than 600 tasted
Côte des Blancs
A deep dive into Champagne’s home of Chardonnay, running south from just outside Epernay, along with 30 of the best current releases
Médoc Grand Cru Classé 2010
It’s a great time to revisit the wines of an excellent-quality Bordeaux vintage such as 2010, as many have now entered their early drinking windows. We assessed 40 wines from many of the Médoc’s top producers, finding 21 wines that scored 94 points or more
CHILE’S NEW WAVE WHITES
Chile is better known for its red wines but, for decades now, the country’s whites have been undergoing a quiet revolution. The result is a raft of exciting styles and accomplished bottles that can stand proudly on the world stage
Premium Argentinian Malbec
Excellent results across the span of Argentina’s prime wine-growing territories, plus some lesser-known areas, saw 60% of these premium Malbecs rated 90pts or more, offering ‘great drinkability’ in many styles
Barolo 2020
The 2020 growing season was hot, but tempered by occurrences of rain and a beneficial lack of heat spikes. Many good wines have been made – witness the high scores in this selection of 30 – but take advice if you’re looking for longer-term keepers
